Born and raised in Guangdong Province, China, Hong Wu moved to New York City with her parents and sister as a college student in 1997. Though she dreamed of becoming an architect, her path led her to a 15-year career in fashion design as a men’s dress-furnishings designer for various heritage companies. During the Covid-19 pandemic, she began to reconsider where she wanted to focus her creativity and artistic capabilities and realized she wished to direct them towards promoting the greater good. Hong’s work explores the social discourse in modern capitalist societies, and how the status quo is being challenged and affected by social movements and events. She experiments with photography, illustration, textiles, mixed media and digital art, and continues to explore new media that extrapolates progressive messages. Her work also emphasizes creative use of recycled materials. Hong lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
