Great America

Great America

description

Used glow sticks, foam insulation board, glow stick juice, trinkets, medical tubes, Mylar, chain, 32” x 18” x 6” Although glow sticks are labeled as non toxic, these temporary toys last forever and leach chemicals into the environment. Some glow products contain a chemical called dibutyl phthalate (DBP). In this artwork the juice from glow sticks was used as “paint” to melt and color the foam board. The American lack of concern about the environment is very distressing. Celebration rituals that use polluters such as fireworks, balloon releases, and glow sticks reflect our focus on this moment and lack of forethought about the consequences on the environment. This is just one example of the many choices we make on a daily basic. Do we think ahead or pollute in the moment.
