Islands of Light
Duncan Park Lake, Spartanburg, SC Eight islands of light arranged in an enormous ellipse are floating in the middle of a lake. The islands delve into the combination of art, nature, and technology. Each island consists of 16 thin fiberglass rods vertically arranged in a circle which are reminiscent of reeds moving in the breeze. The rods are topped with white LED lights that move throughout the circular formation in synchronicity. The lights chase around each island and create large-scale geometric patterns across the entire lake. The extensive nature of the site allows for the islands to interact completely with their surroundings. The water reflecting the glow off its surface, and the breeze creating subtle movements in the lit rods create a hybrid environment oscillating between the real and the virtual.
