Pandora's Box - Origami Sculpture
Special Origami Sculpture for Mykonos Biennale 2019 (Apathia). Gouache, acrylic, mirrored mylar, & paper on yupo w/ painted figurines in mirrored box. Approximately 26 in x 8 in x 6 in (66.04 cm x 20.32 cm x 15.24 cm). 2019. Exhibited as part of Antidote Treasure Hunt on the ancient & sacred Island of Dilos. Permanent Collection of the Mykonos Biennale (Mykonos, Greece) Playfully popping out of its box as a dynamic origami sculpture, Biennale attendees were invited to discover this work - and other boxed objects - amidst the ancient ruins on the sacred island of Dilos. As with the myth of Pandora, an explosion of imagery & forms pop out of this cultural "jack in the box" only to quickly unfold and descend - an action that mirrors the inevitable collapse of any great civilization. Playing off this sense of nostalgia - with consciously manufactured symbols summoning Western romantic notions of beauty through art & architecture - small contemporary figurines witness the very icons of beauty descending into a futuristic folly where wild vines dangle into the blue abyss.
