My first work came out of the admiration for the culture of the Southern Resident Orcas- a culture that needs to be protected. Within the same species, different groups have unique dialects, diet preferences, and fads. My piece is a nod to the fad over 10 years ago where young orcas wore salmon on their heads. While these orca prefer Chinook salmon once they reach 30 inches, this is becoming extremely infrequent and difficult to find. Sadly, this fad would not be possible today due to decline in population and body size of salmon, echoed here by the patchwork of fabric. Reused fabric 12"x33"x5"
